Pehr Wilhelm Wargentin was the Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy
of Sciences for 34 years. He was one of the most prominent scientists of his time
within the fields of astronomy and meteorology, and was also known as the founding
father of Swedish population statistics.
Wargentin moved to the Observatory with his family on April the 12th 1753, where
he lived and worked until his death in 1783.
For a long time, Wargentin was the only employee of the Academy of Sciences and
as such responsible for the Academy’s correspondence and administration. He kept
a diary where he recorded his daily life at the Observatory as well as his work
within science and research.
The opening of the Observatory on the 20th of September 1753 is described in his
diary as “the most joyful and glorious day the Academy has ever had.”
